San Diego Downtown Lions Club

San Diego Downtown Lions Club
History

It all began with Phineas Packard, owner of San Diego Arts and Crafts Press, who was convinced that what San Diego needed was a youthful organization. This organization should know how to work hard and to play hard – and to do both at the same time!

Mister Packard started his campaign on August 12, 1921 by inviting 11 influential businessmen to lunch at the San Diego Hotel.  They agreed to pursue membership in the fledgling international organization called the Lions Club, and to contact the Los Angeles Lions Club for help.

On a Saturday in the following month, the group met for dinner at the U.S. Grant Hotel with four members of the Los Angeles Club. The first official meeting of the San Diego Club was September 29 at the San Diego Hotel. After reaching the requisite 50 members, the club received its official charter on April 8, 1922.

Our club has grown steadily, but with ups and downs and currently has 135 members. We have accomplished many altruistic achievements including:

Buildings for the Girl Scouts, Lions Optometric Vision Clinic, Blind Recreation Center, and our own Lions Manor, including our current meeting place, were funded by our club.

We have supported over 300 charitable organizations including the San Diego Rescue Mission, the Blind Recreation Center, San Diego Deaf Community Services, SD Association for Retarded Citizens, Include Autism, Reality Changers, Outdoor Outreach and Partners with Industry.

We developed and annually host the Mike Morrow, now called the San Diego Lions Baseball tournament which features high school baseball teams from around the United States.

We sponsor Lions Camp Jack which provides a week of recreational camp for needy and financially disadvantaged children.

We have “adopted” many elementary and secondary schools in need such as Valencia Park Elementary School, Monarch School for homeless children and Mark Twain High School for students needing a second chance.

Continuing the original premise to work hard and play hard at the same time, we are the premier service organization in San Diego County.
