Lions on Safari @ Blind Community Center of San Diego and the Lions Optometric Vision Clinic

November 8, 2022 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

We will have an early lunch at the Center’s Auditorium and then tour both the Blind Community Center of San Diego and the Lions Optometric Vision Clinic (LOVC). These organizations are co-located in Balboa Park at 1805 Upas St, San Diego, CA 92103.

The Blind Community Center of San Diego (BCCSD) enriches the lives of blind and visually impaired adults, preparing them for a normal, active life in a society that is principally sighted. They provide an environment for personal growth, social integration and interaction, and the development of individual skills and talents. Through sharing, caring, tolerance, and respect, participants develop a sense of family and community.

The Lions Optometric Vision Clinic (LOVC) was established to provide vision care to individuals in our community that could not otherwise afford adequate care. This service has provided eyeglasses to over 10,000 individuals. More than 200 San Diego agencies currently refer patients to the clinic. It has been the tireless effort and dedication of volunteers from the Lions Club and the San Diego County Optometric Society that have made this a successful project.

The LOCV serves 20 – 30 patients per day and 400 – 600 patients per month! Their clients include:

  • Rehabilitation and Senior programs
  • Kids K-12, College Students, and adult education programs
  • Juvenile Facilities at Campo, Camp Barret, GRF, and Juvenile Hall
  • Military Dependents (E-6 and below, as well as Enlisted Retirees)
  • Vision therapy, at no cost, for elementary school kids

All of LOVC Doctors volunteer their time and the majority of frames are donated.
