The Arc of San Diego

The Downtown San Diego Lions Club maintains a minority position on the Board of Directors of The Arc of San Diego (formerly the Association of Retarded Citizens). In 1977 the Downtown San Diego Lions Club took on the responsibility of building a classroom and workshop that would become known as the Lions Workshop Building. The Club and its Welfare Foundation funded half of the cost of the facility and The Arc’s North Shores Vocational Center is located on Aero Drive. The Center provides work training for developmentally disabled citizens of our community. Private industry contracts with The Arc to perform certain assemblage and/or packaging projects, which teach these citizens a skill and provides them an opportunity to mainstream into the community.

October 20, 1977, was declared Lions Workshop for the Retarded Day by then Mayor Pete Wilson. The Downtown San Diego Lions Club continues to support The Arc and funded the workshop’s restoration in 19xx.
